Improving your appearance by treating acne has always been a challenge. Using medication proves to be hard because you always have to look for what suits your skin best. 30 years ago, scientists and medical researchers came with a solution for all kinds of skin. Tretinoin (Retin-A) is the medicine that produced the most outstanding results in the fight against acne, and improvement of the overall face appearance.
Tretionoin (Retin-A) used for facial treatments, is a derivative of the A Vitamin. Tretinoin is used in the treatment for whiteheads and blackheads by increasing the turnover of skin cells, promoting the extrusion of the infectious material from the follicle. Tretinoin enhances collagen production and the natural exfoliation of the skin. Retin-A is used also for treating the skin that was damaged from the sun, light freckling and skin discoloration caused by aging. It is one of the best medicines that proved to be very effective against wrinkles, turning it into an anti-aging solution.
Tretinoin treatments may produce irritation and flanking because it’s action is to increase skin cell turnover. Many patients stop using Tretinoin after just a few days because of this reason and by doing so they fail to benefit from the drug’s therapeutic benefits. To use Tretinoin effectively in your treatments it is important to know that in the case of blackheads and whiteheads, the effects of Tretinoin may not appear up until 6 to 9 weeks. You must use this treatment for a minimum period of 6 months, to see the differences in your appearance.
To maximize the benefits of Retin-A Tretinoin you may consider taking into account some of the following tips. Tretinoin is prescribed, for the majority of cases, to be used once daily, preferably in the evening after washing your face or affected skin with a cleanser. After doing so you have to wait for your face/affected skin to dry, then to apply Tretinoin (Retin-A) on all the surface of the affected skin. There are some very used steps that you can follow to obtain the desired results just the way you want:
Step 1: Wash with a mild facial scrub or rough wash cloth in the morning to help reduce any noticeable flaking.
Step 2: Use a good water-based moisturizer and apply it after washing. It will help you be more tolerant to the drying effects of Retin-A.
Step3: Apply Tretinoin in a thin layer at night.
While following a treatment with Tretinoin your skin may be affected more quickly by the sun. Therefore try using a moisturizer that contains also UV protection. If you cannot find such a moisturizer or you cannot use such a substance apply sunscreen every time you are exposed to the sun, even if you are exposed for a short period of time.
The flaking and irritation side effects are usually the worst in the first 2 weeks of application. As your skin adjusts to the medicine, you can apply it more frequently. You can take a break for a couple of days if you notice an increase in the irritation or flaking, but do not halt the treatment completely without consulting your pharmacist or dermatologist.
